Finished project - summary on MusE
#1
Hello,

I've finished one more project with MusE, this one has 10 songs. It's a pop-rock album, soon it will be uploaded on bandcamp. (I will submit the link later.)
Here are my impressions while using MusE as audio and MIDI sequencer on Ubuntu Studio 12.04:

2.0.1

Bugs

- bug with arranger window not maximized when reopen the project
- occasional crash when working in wave editor
- wave editor > gain > other : does opposite, or I am in the wrong?
- drum editor: f shortcut is not working
- occasional MusE crash on effects dragging/duplicating (DSSI Calf plugins)
- doesn't show native GUI for some effect instance (DSSI), it just hangs for a while, plain GUI is shown. After restart it is normal again, sometimes it is not. (Calf plugins)

2.1.0

bugs

- opening DSSI effect GUI (latest calf) interrupts playback for ~0.5s leaving Xrun - (more severe than 2.0.1)
- presing save while playing makes xrun and interrupts play - (more severe than 2.0.1, using JACK1)

Wishlist (from 2.0.1)

- lv2 support
- connection popup window to be persistent, like in MusE 1.1, allowing to select multiple ports before window closes
- hand tool for horizontal scroll (middle button shortcut would be nice)
- Zoom at playhead or at mouse cursor - **cool I saw that you have already did that <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->
- cut at playhead selected track/part - using scissors is not precise, audio parts need this
- automatic color change of midi parts when changed
- exponential fade - (some how linear fades out quickly) - here I'm refering on automation of the faders, It's needed to manualy add more points
- possibility to refine selection points in wave editor - something like in Audacity
- "dirty bit" in tittle
- mixer faders save positions
- mixer fader groups
- drum editor: show velocity while audition clicking on list in left pane
- arranger: duplicate tracks - with all audio or MIDI parts and effects - **cool I saw that you have already did that <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->
- number indicator on maximum reached signal level in mixer not just a line on VU meter
- trim audio parts both form start and end, (now only from end is possible)

Overall, MusE is quite stable, useable and sounds good. Only few crashes (while draging effects form one track to another in mixer, and while working in wave editor). Most annoying thing was zoom - because origin point was at begining, connecting ports - because window closes on first click, horizontal scroll - a could really use "handtool" to pan left-right. Another problems I had on start up is that it crashed standalone applications which had MIDI connections (Guitarix, I was trying to use MIDI programs to set the Guitarix patches). That is all I can remembre now, I was working on project since summer.

I would like to thank the devlopers for makeing a good and trusty audio and MIDI sequencer - thanks!

Hi jpromis!

Sounds great with you completing the album, is there anything to listen to somewhere? <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

And thanks for the bug list, several of them I know well but tend to forget... I'll make another effort att keeping track of them.

Thanks,
Robert

Hello again,

read it through a bit more and think I should comment on some.

jpromis Wrote:- wave editor > gain > other : does opposite, or I am in the wrong?
Indeed, I noticed this too, will fix right away.
jpromis Wrote:- connection popup window to be persistent, like in MusE 1.1, allowing to select multiple ports before window closes
I think there is a setting for this. It is also possible to hold ctrl when operating the popup to keep it open.
jpromis Wrote:- hand tool for horizontal scroll (middle button shortcut would be nice)
I guess you mean like clicking on the background and dragging to move around? Not a bad idea.
I hope you know you can hold shift and use the mouse-wheel to scroll horizontal also?

Robert

Hello spamatica,

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't know about this, I've just tried and it is cool. And I found the setting in global settings - I've didn't noticed that. That's it.
Also I found some other settings that I needed. <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->

Yes, I know about this, it is not bad, but "hand/pan tool" I think would be more efficient and intuitive, at least for me. We can find this type of behaviour in many programs like GIMP (middle mouse button), Eog (left and middle mouse button), Evince (middle mouse button). I know that currently in Arranger middle mouse button erase parts. This can be tricky, I found my self accidentally many times erasing parts. But binding middle mouse button to horizontal (+maybe vertical) "scroll", or better say drag, would be more benefit than the erase function. Of course, it can be any other combination (e.g in Blender it is shift+middle mouse button). And speaking of Blender, it has continues mouse movment, which means that it doesn't depends of screen edge. So, if we would have this drag function, in very zoomed view we could continiusly go right/left(up/down) without worring about mouse pointer reaching the edge of the screen.
This drag function is not something that MusE really needs it, not like lv2 support <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->, but it would be nice to have.

Hi there.

Hold on to your hat, the next release contains a whackload of editing fixes.

And... each editor now has Pan (hand) and Zoom (magnifier) tools.
And zoom can now be done with Ctrl-wheel.
And... it zooms about the cursor point. Yep. Not from the left edge any more.

Although I only just added this stuff, you can try the SVN branch before we release,
but shouldn't be much longer till the next release.

If you try it be sure to read the new README.usage file as it describes how to
use all this stuff and more.

Quotes:

- opening DSSI effect GUI (latest calf) interrupts playback for ~0.5s leaving Xrun - (more severe than 2.0.1)
- presing save while playing makes xrun and interrupts play - (more severe than 2.0.1, using JACK1)
Mm, yeah there are some interruptions in certain operations as we tell the audio to wait for a bit
during long operations.

Wishlist (from 2.0.1)

- lv2 support
Eventually but might be a while.
Motivation: I do accept donations <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

- cut at playhead selected track/part - using scissors is not precise, audio parts need this
OK noted. Thought there was a way but maybe not.

- automatic color change of midi parts when changed
Yeah, slowly working on part colour ideas, recently too. Trying to tie it all together. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

- exponential fade - (some how linear fades out quickly) - here I'm refering on automation of the faders, It's needed to manualy add more points
Yeah fades we're discussing recently. Can't promise anything soon but we're talking.

- possibility to refine selection points in wave editor - something like in Audacity
OK Noted.

- "dirty bit" in tittle
Oh yeah, the little 'star'. OK.

- mixer faders save positions
Mm, they do. You mean you save and they don't reload at the same place? That'd be a bug.
Contact us in the devel or user lists and try to post an example and we'll work it out, or file
a bug report. Else have you tried automation features?

- mixer fader groups
See fades above.

- drum editor: show velocity while audition clicking on list in left pane
There's a new button in the velocity graphs to show per-note.
Besides, the graph should change as you move in the list. Is that what you mean?

- arranger: duplicate tracks - with all audio or MIDI parts and effects - **cool I saw that you have already did that <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->
Mostly works, some recent bug fixes there too.

- number indicator on maximum reached signal level in mixer not just a line on VU meter
Oh yeah. Been thinking about numbers and VU decorations for a while now. So many tasks to do...
Also a mode with circular VUs surrounding the knobs, for ultra-compact mixers.

- trim audio parts both form start and end, (now only from end is possible)
Mm yeah. No left-sizing ATM. Various vague ideas about fixing that but nothing concrete yet.

Thanks for using MusE.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Tim.

Hello terminator356,

I need to clarify what I ment.

- mixer faders save positions

Yes, MusE remembers faders positions, and it reloads it. I ment, to make a sort of presets for the mixer. For example. I make one mix, and I want to remeber it, because I want to try something else. So i could have A, B, C.. mix in the same project. I can make new med files, but it could be more handy to have a "mixer fader preset", not needing to reopen files to compare mixes.

- mixer fader groups

You make one (rough) mix of 10 tracks. Than you add some new tracks, and you realise that the pervious 10 tracks need to be quieter, but you like their overall balance. You make a "fader group" of that 10 tracks, and they move together as one by lowering just one of them. I know that you can actually send audio to a group track and achive same thing, but I think fader groups would be nice.

Ah OK got it.
For (1) Not sure how we could proceed on this but good idea, will keep in mind.
For (2) probably the closest thing I could do at the moment is support 'linked' controls.
As per the recent discussions on LAD, I'm currently working on mixer strips trying to
figure out new faders and panners and plugin rack operations.
Still not sure how it is all going to, excuse the pun, 'pan out', if at all...
Certainly can't promise anything here but will keep these suggestions in mind.
Thanks.
Tim.

Hi,
I'm not sure who added it and I don't think it's finished but there is a "Snapshot" menu item in the mixer menu. Isn't this pretty much the solution for making mixer presets?

Robert
