How to tune up your Jeep audio system

Tuning the Sound in A Jeep. Instruction for Beginners

Buying new audio components for your car is only the first step on the way to perfect car audio. Even if the head unit and the acoustics connected to it will be from the top segment, you will need a thorough and competent tuning of the system to achieve a really effective sound. All electrical circuitry of the sound path can be divided into two types:

– Conventional systems, consisting of a stereo and connected speaker;

– systems in conjunction with separate amplifiers.

Tuning in the usual scheme without power amplifiers.

  • To start with, we turn on the music of your favorite genre, turn up the volume until the “hoarseness” in the sound of the acoustics appears. Now we turn down the volume a little, and the timbres of the audio system (“lows” and “tops”) begin to slowly “pull out”. There will be nothing difficult with the treble, it is difficult to overdo it, but it is better to adjust the bass at this volume according to the principle “more is better” up to the level of the best Jeep TJ speakers rattle. So, we got the maximum possible “clean” power.
  • Now let’s deal with the setting of the fader (time delays between the rear and front channels). If the fader control is set to “zero” – the sound scene will be “blurred”.
  • Important rule: rear acoustics must play the role of a subwoofer, and almost all the sound power must fall on the front acoustics, otherwise we will not get the correct sound scene.
  • If the rear speakers significantly overpower the front speakers, adjust the fader with the amplification to the front. Component rear speakers are often a useless redundancy, but if you want to “curb” them, you can reduce the sound of the tweeters by a couple of decibels in the crossover. If there is no such crossover in the electrical sound chain, it is possible to put more emphasis on the front speakers in the fader.
  • Setting the balance (left/right) is just as important when adjusting the sound like the same fader. If adjusting the system for the driver, losing sight of the passengers’ opinions, you can tweak the balance with an emphasis on the right side. The result will be a “softer” stereo panorama.

Tuning the Sound Circuit With Power Amplifiers

Setting up with an amplifier. This circuit will add to the “normal” setup by adjusting the power level of the amplifier and tweaking the filters. It is also worth considering the configuration of the loudspeakers, but this is a matter of component selection. To begin with, match the signal levels of the amplifier and the boombox. Set the boombox to the factory settings (zero), and set the power level of the amplifier to the minimum position of sensitivity. Increase the volume on the boombox until it begins to rattle. Now smoothly decrease the volume level until the audible distortion disappears. Also, adjust the input level of the amplifier, setting the possible “ceiling” without distortion. Done. Now the levels of the amplifier and the boombox are matched in power.

The low pass and high pass filters are used to “filter out” the audio signal with a frequency different from the nominal. The crossover filters ensure that only the low-frequency signal reaches the low-frequency loudspeakers and only the high-frequency signal reaches the high-frequency loudspeakers. This frees the sound path from overloading and associated audio distortion. The presetting is ready.

Self-Installation of The Car Stereo

Most car enthusiasts may change car stereos several times during the operation of the car. This can be due to its breakage, the owner of the car being more demanding to the sound, or the boombox can simply become obsolete. To install a new device often turn to car service centers, but this procedure can also be done independently.

However, if you still have questions about Gladiator Sound System, then be sure to go to the forum where you can find answers to all your questions. Only here you can talk to experts and learn important information and what other ways there are to improve the power of your car.

When Installing the Audio System, You Should Also Consider Such Factors As:

  • Power should preferably be carried out with  separate wiring directly going from the battery to the boombox. In this case, the diameter of supply wires should be not less than the diameter of the wires, located at the output of the boombox.
  • Red and yellow wires are used when powering the boombox. The yellow one is for powering the memory, and the red one is for disconnecting the boombox and implies an output to the ignition switch. It means that the car radio will automatically turn off after the ignition is turned off. The most convenient variant is considered parallel connection of yellow and red wires, in this case, the radio-recorder will be turned off only after pressing the button on the radio-recorder panel.

However, in this case, there can be problems related to the fact that the boombox amplifiers are powered from the red wire, also in standby mode. Therefore, the current consumption increases, which means that the battery can be discharged faster. To avoid this situation, you can put a separate switch on the red wire of the radio, then the power will independently turn off when the car is parked for a long time.

Summary

Final adjustment of sound in your car is desirable only after a month and a half after installation and the beginning of operation of the entire system. During this period, it is advisable not to set the volume level higher than half of the maximum, so as not to damage the acoustic heads. The fact is that during this time the rubber suspensions in the speakers will become softer. The swaying of subwoofers usually takes longer – from a couple of months to half a year. After fine-tuning the sound path you will be able to feel all the power and beauty of the car sound, which only your system is able to produce.
